Hello and welcome back to the Curious Kid podcast. We've been doing this podcast for five months,

and we've done a few episodes with holiday themes. Yeah, we got curious about candy for Halloween.

We did. We also got curious about the year in 1919 for New Year's, and we learned about televisions

for Super Bowl Sunday, but we have never really discussed the holiday specifically like we are

going to do today. This week we're getting curious about Valentine's Day. Valentine's Day is

coming up this week and lots of people worldwide celebrate this holiday of love,

although many people don't really know the origins of the holiday.

A Valentine's Day, the holiday was the most cards you're given?

Okay, let's get into the history of Valentine's Day. Before I begin,

let me tell you that the origins of Valentine's Day are not known for certain, although there are

some popular theories. The most popular theory centers around a man named St. Valentine, who lived a long time ago.

He lived in Rome over 1700 years ago.

And at this time, Rome was ruled by a man named Emperor Claudius.

Well, Claudius was obsessed with defending Rome against its enemies, so he made a law.

The law said soldiers couldn't get married.

Exactly. He wanted young men to be soldiers in his Roman army, so he didn't want them falling

in love and getting married. But same Valentine's married soldiers anyways. He did. He married soldiers in secret. He thought it wasn't

fair to prevent soldiers from getting married, so he married soldiers until he got caught and was put in

prison. There are two stories about what happened next. One of them is that while St. Valentine was in prison,

the couples that he married would visit him in prison

and give him cards and gifts that would later come to be called Valentine's.
