Hello and welcome back to the Curious Kid podcast. Olivia and I have a goal we try to accomplish with this podcast.

Our goal is to get curious about everything. That's right. We want to get curious about everything until there is nothing left to get curious about. That means that sometimes we have to get

curious about things, even if people might think they're disgusting. In December, we got curious about

garbage. In March, we got curious about throwing up. And this week we're getting curious about

toilets.

Sounds like fun, so let's get started.

What's the question of the week?

How many times do the average person use a toilet every year?

That's a fun question.

So before we discuss how toilets work, let's understand why they are so important.

Toilets are important because they prevent diseases.

Our waste has germs and bacteria.

So toilets are helpful in flushing our waste away and making sure that it isn't able to get us or other people sick.

Unfortunately, there's still lots of people that don't have a toilet to use.

About one billion people worldwide don't have access to a toilet.

That's nearly one out of every eight people in the entire world.

In these places that don't have toilets, diseases that are spread through waste, like cholera, are common.

My parents were not born in the United States, and for periods of their childhood years,

they didn't have access to a toilet and had to use an outhouse instead.

I know what an outhouse is.

An outhouse is a house made out of wood and there's a toilet that doesn't flush inside the outhouse.
