Have you ever wondered how things may have looked in the past?

I know I have.

Sometimes I wonder what the area I live in used to be like hundreds or even thousands of years ago.

A couple of weeks ago, Noah and I went to a Rutgers football game.

Rutgers is the college I went to, and it's located in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

While we were there, we walked alongside the Raritan River.

That's when I told Noah that an important person from American history actually crossed

the Raritan River hundreds of years ago.

That person was George Washington.

Yep, that George Washington, first president of the United States.

During the Revolutionary War, he was nearly captured by British troops when Washington led his forces

across the Raritan River, escaping from British troops. This amazed Noah, because it's sometimes

hard to imagine that George Washington once walked through the same area where Rutgers University

now stands. Well, it just so happens that there are special places in the United States

that are so important for historical or archaeological reasons,

or because they have some unique features, that they are protected by the United States government.

Other countries also have similar designations
