Hello! And welcome back to the Curious Kid podcast. Many of us learn about the five senses at a pretty young age. Those senses are sight, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. It's by using those senses that we are able to experience the world around us.

Well, animals have senses too, but just because animals have senses,

that doesn't mean that they experience things the same way as humans.

Let's take seals, for example.

Their whiskers allow them to detect fish that are swimming up to 600 feet away

using something called a hydrodynamic trail. How about this one? The body of a catfish

is actually wrapped in taste buds. That allows it to detect the flavor of its prey before starting

its meal.

Here's another cool one.

Bumblebees pick up a small positive charge while they fly.

Flowers naturally have a negative charge.

Tiny hairs on a bee's legs can sense the attraction that exists between the positive and

negative charges, which sends a signal

for the bee to land on the flower. After the honeybee leaves, other bees can sense the change

on the flower so they don't bother to stop at the same exact flower. This week, we are going to learn

about another super cool feature some animals have to allow them to sense their surroundings.
