Jera Thomas is an Aboriginal Australian born

of mixed race parents. Is a young writer whose journey to understand

identity and its complexity is the subject of his plays and novels.

He'll travel the world to present his work and to find inspiration.

For today's documentary Culture, Not Color,

Sharon Masco went to meet Jera Thomas in Adelaide.

Some of my first and best childhood memories are listening to Bob Marley as a kid.

A lot of Aboriginal people were wearing the rustic colours, red, golden green

and seemed like everywhere I went. There was a lot of Bob Marley music.

Not many people know that Bob Marley is of mixed ancestry.

He has a father who's from Liverpool, England

and I think Bob even at times probably had to struggle with his identity.

Jera Thomas is a Bob Marley fan.

He's got the albums, the t-shirt and giant speakers that make his house

shaped or reggae beat. This song called Exodus is about people

finding their identity and returning to their culture.

An idea Jera would feel strongly about and wants to explore with me

in this BBC World Service documentary. Like Bob Marley,
