Summary

Something Wicked this way comes as Dana, Steve, and guest host Dan Kois gather round their proverbial cauldrons for an all-movie edition of the Gabfest. First up, of course, is Wicked: For Good the green/pink-hued conclusion to the alternative history of Oz. This sequel, which reunites Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande as witch besties/mortal enemies, goes to surprisingly dark places. Next, they discuss Train Dreams, the contemplative and grandeur-filled adaptation of Denis Johnson’s novella directed by Clint Bentley. Finally, they sit down for a long, rich conversation between friends in Peter Hujar’s Day, a chamber piece by Ira Sachs about art, friendship, and how much can happen in a single day. In our bonus episode for Slate Plus subscribers, Julia hops on the call to continue our recap series of Pluribus. The hosts get into all the details of Pluribus episode 5 “Got Milk.” We’re still taking submissions for our call-in show. If you’ve got a burning cultural question or topic you’d like our hosts to tackle, call and leave us a message at:  347-201-2397 Endorsements: Dan: Matching Minds with Sondheim by Barry Joseph, a whole book about Stephen Sondheim’s love of puzzles. Steve: The jazz album Mal/4 by Mal Waldron Trio and Tim (Let it Bleed Edition) by the Replacements. Dana: The Broadway production of Waiting for Godot that reunites none other than Bill and Ted with stars Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter. Hi, I'm Dana Stevens, and this is the Slate Culture Gab Fest, Wicked Triple Feature Edition.

0:15.3

It's Wednesday, November 26, 2025, and this week we'll be discussing, first off, Wicked for Good. The second part of what,

0:22.7

if you add it to last year's box office smash Wicked, adds up to a nearly five-hour-long

0:27.6

adaptation of the Blockbuster Stage musical. Next, we'll discuss Train Dreams, a new film from

0:33.3

the indie director Clint Bentley that's an adaptation of a Dennis Johnson novella about the lonely life of a man laboring to clear land for the expanding railroad in the early 20th century.

0:43.2

And finally, an even smaller scale new independent release, Peter Hoogar's Day, stars Ben Wishaw as the photographer, Peter Hujar, and Rebecca Hall as the writer Linda Rosencrantz.

0:52.9

The two spent a whole day in conversation in Rosencran's apartment as part of her research for a book she's writing.

0:58.5

This is a very unusual two-person chamberpiece of a movie, kind of a queer My Dinner with Andre from the director, Ira Sacks.

1:05.3

Joining me to talk about this triple movie feature are the writer Dan Cois, late of Slate, but now a free-range writer doing

1:13.2

whatever the hell he wants, I guess. Hello, Dan. Free range writer, I'm roaming the planes,

1:18.3

like some kind of Robert Greeneer. Gazing. What about, what about like, hormones or antibiotics?

1:26.5

Are you getting those?

1:28.5

I mean, not that I'm planning to eat you, but...

1:31.1

Ah, I'm richly marbled.

1:33.5

We're fattening you up.

1:37.6

And richly marbled as ever is the critic, Stephen Metcalfe.

1:42.4

Yeah, veined, hard, cold.

1:46.0

I don't even know where this metaphor is going.

1:49.1

Marmorial. Yes, there you go.

1:50.6

Marble meat.

1:52.4

Yes, lovely to see you, Dana.

1:53.9

Yes, very good to be with both of you, too.
