Summary

These bitesize episodes focus on the greatest lessons we’ve learnt from the guests we've had on the podcast.

This week we go back to episode 103 with sports psychologist and culture coach Dr Pippa Grange. Pippa was appointment by the FA as its Head of People and Team Development with the England football team and worked with the players during the buildup to the successful World Cup in 2018 on relationships, getting the players to drop their mask and work with greater cohesion. This included getting the players to sit down together in small groups to share their life experiences and anxieties, and to reveal intimate truths about their character and what drives them.

Hey everyone, welcome along to another Bite Size episode of the High Performance Podcast

0:03.8

and very soon the World Cup will be upon us. Are you excited, Damien?

0:08.0

Yeah, I was going to say I'm starting to get excited. I think it will be when the first thing

0:11.8

the game kicks off. I just can't feel it for many, many reasons. No, I don't think I'll be

0:15.9

watching to be honest, but what we are going to be doing is talking about World Cup experiences

0:21.3

on the podcast. In fact, we will share a short clip with you at the end of this with the

0:25.5

guest that Jonas on Monday, which will be cool, but we've had some really interesting footballers

0:30.0

and football people in the podcast, but we've also had some fascinating people that have worked in

0:34.8

the world of football. And often, Damien and I think people who come from a different world

0:38.8

and immerse themselves in football bringing cognitive diversity to that world are really

0:43.7

interesting. This is Pippa Grange. She's a psychologist. She's worked with the England team and,

0:49.0

you know, Damien, Gareth Southgate has said explicitly that she helped make a real difference,

0:53.0

right? Yeah. I remember working out it's 719 days between England getting

0:59.5

ignominiously to Iceland in the 2016 European Championships to then getting

1:05.0

beaten the semi-finals of the World Cup in 2018. And you can look at players that were added,

1:11.7

but the reality is there were 13 players that were involved in that day in Iceland to being

1:16.4

involved in against Croatia. So it's more important to say what was actually added and the answer

1:22.5

was Dr Pippa Grange who came into England in between that period and started to work on

1:28.4

relationships, trying to get the players to drop their mask, to be vulnerable, to start working

1:34.7

with greater cohesion. So when we got to speak through it was an absolute privilege.

1:39.2

And that's exactly what she talked about. It was a fascinating, wide-ranging interview on

1:43.7

live performance podcast. You can hear the whole interview, but here's a snippet exactly as
