But I have treated tons of individual women who are no longer in the religion that they grew up in

and speak a lot about how it's impacted them. The most common theme I notice is that they have

an inability to trust themselves or even know what their own thoughts are. Then the growth there

becomes what are their thoughts and how can they attune and regulate themselves as opposed to

looking outside for answers for literally every piece of their behavior. Right. So when we talk

about gaslighting in our culture, we're typically using it incorrectly, but cults almost always,

if not always, gaslight their participants. Rebecca, you just basically describe the effect of that,

which is you don't trust your own brain or your ability to think or judge things. It's like

what's real, what's not real, because cults by definition and you could absolutely argue that
