As I read Scard, the memoir of Nexium Whistleblower Sarah Edmondson, about her 12 years in the MLM-ish cult that resulted in being branded in a secret ceremony,

a shocking and brave New York Times exposé, and an HBO documentary called The Vow, I couldn't help but take note of how many times money was mentioned.

I'd venture to say about one-third of the book featured in-depth discussions about how much the courses and intensive cost,

how new recruits were pressured to spend above their means, and the constant misuse of funds.

There were also the repeated assertions that along with being celibate,

leader of Nexium Keith Reneerie, now in jail for 120 years for his crimes,

was someone who owned no material possessions.

And this was seen as a trait that placed him above other people, enlightened, brilliant.

Of course, none of it was true.

With multi-level marketing schemes like the leggings company Lula Ro, or the dietary supplements Urbal Life,

the financial component of the scam is obvious.
