I'm Claire Graham and with the help of my BBC colleagues around the world, I'll be trying to get a

better understanding of the stories that matter to all of us. Today Cuba and the United States

understanding their uneasy relationship. I'm joined by Anna Maria Rura, a journalist with the

World Service. Welcome to the explanation Anna Maria. Hi Claire, I'm very happy to be here to talk

about it. I think it'd be really helpful for our listeners first of all to give us a sense of

high-close neighbors. Cuba and the US really are. We are talking about only 90 miles separating

Miami from the west of Cuba, but we call also say that it's been a love-hate relationship between

these very close neighbors. One of the most important episodes in this tremendous relationship we

could say to place in 1898 at the time Cuba was as most of the countries in Latin America

was an Spain colony. The US was an emerging power that wanted to control more territories and

got involved in a very short war with Spain that was at the time losing all control

in its territories in Latin America. Both military powers disputed control over Cuba, Puerto Rico,

Filipinas and one and the United States won that war and granted independence to Cuba. But for
