You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith.

0:32.2

Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Monday, May 16th, 2020. Today is also the feast day of St. Simon Stock,

0:42.4

who is known as the founder of the Carmelite Order. Now, this week on the Catholic Sprouts podcast, we are going to be talking about the person of the month, the person that May is dedicated to, and that is our good and gracious blessed

0:48.5

mother, Mary.

0:50.7

One of my favorite stories to read in our Catholic faith are stories of Marian apparitions.

0:58.9

Now, Marian apparitions are times where Mary came, appeared on earth to the faithful, and delivered to these people specific messages.

1:09.6

She always appeared in a certain way, a specific time and place to specific people.

1:16.1

And as it turns out, the person who is celebrating a feast day today, St. Simon Stock,

1:23.7

well, he received a marrying apparition.

1:27.6

So the story goes, the St. Simon Stock was a Carmelite monk.

1:31.7

1:38.1

like they do today.

1:39.6

So St. Simon Stock took it upon himself to start organizing that.

1:46.9

And as he was prayerfully doing this,

1:56.3

he had a vision of Mary. He had a vision of Mary holding the baby Jesus, and she handed him what we know now as the brown scapular. So the brown scapular, if you are a lay person, it is two small pieces of brown

2:04.9

fabric, oftentimes with a Marian symbol on them, connected by a cord. So one piece goes on the front,

2:11.7

one piece goes on your back. If you are a religious person, the scapular is a big piece of fabric, almost like it goes over your shoulders, almost like an ox, the yoke around their neck, but the front goes nearly to your feet in the front and the back.

2:28.5

And that is a scapular.

2:30.2

Mary gave all sorts of promises with this scapular to St. Simon's stock, especially about

2:35.6

about how they would be protected while wearing this, especially at the end of life. So,

2:42.1

Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock and gave him the brown scapular. So this is just one very small

2:49.9

story. And all week, we're going to talk about
