0:53.3	Today is also the feast day of St. Nicholas.
0:57.5	So happy St. Nick's Day. Now, St. Nicholas is a very interesting saint that has been used for all sorts of reasons in our modern world, but the actual
1:05.4	man, St. Nicholas, he was born about the year 300, and he died about the year 345. So he lived at the very
1:15.5	end of the time period when it was still illegal to be a Christian. He was born into a wealthy
1:23.1	family, but his parents died when he was very young. As a result, he inherited a lot of money, but he was very devout, dedicated his life to Jesus Christ.
1:33.3	And although we don't know a ton about him, we do know that he went on to be a bishop.
1:39.3	Also, one of the most popular stories about St. Nicholas is that, according to legend, there were three
1:45.5	daughters in a very poor family, and they did not have a dowry. Now, at the time, a dowry was an
1:53.8	amount of money that a family paid to the family of their daughter's husband when they got married, just sort of an amount
2:03.9	that went with a bride to her new family. But they didn't have that money. So since they didn't
2:09.5	have that money, the only other option for women at the time was slavery. So to save these girls
2:16.4	from becoming slaves, St. Nicholas allegedly secretly gave them
2:22.1	bags of gold. And as the story goes, he threw them up to come down their chimney. The bags
2:29.7	of gold came down their chimney and fell into their socks, which were hanging in front of the fireplace
2:36.1	to dry overnight. And in the morning, when they woke up, they found bags of gold in their
2:42.3	socks. So that is why we have their tradition of giving gifts on St. Nicholas' Day and putting them
