Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Wednesday, September 22nd, 2021. Today we have the honor of celebrating some more very heroic Asian martyrs. Today we are celebrating Filipino martyrs from the nation of the Philippines,

who gave their life as Christians and as testimony to the goodness of God and the truth of

the Christian faith. Specifically, we are celebrating Lorenzo Riez and companions who died as martyrs.

Now, this week on the Catholic Spouts podcast, we are talking about religion.

We are talking about why it's not okay to simply believe in God, but try to find him and worship

him on your own with no guidance.

But instead, we need to be part of a faith tradition, specifically the Catholic faith, that will give us a set of beliefs and a

proper way to worship God. Yesterday we talked about how we need to be really drawing on the experience of those that

came before us. And today we are going to examine how religion is really a road map to God.

Now, there are many parts of the Catholic faith that you might not totally understand.

For example, we have rules about specifically what we can do during the season of Lent.

Lent, of course, is a time of preparation before Easter. And one of those things

that's sort of strange for Catholics is that we abstain from meat on Friday. In fact, some of us

abstain from meat every Friday, but we do this in particular during Lent. Now, that might

seem strange. And to many people in the world, it does seem odd, right?

Why can't you eat meat?

That seems really weird.

Why is it that?

And although you might not be able to really explain why specifically it's avoiding meat,

there's some really rich history and everything here.
