| 0:00.0 | You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith. |
| 0:31.0 | Hey there, sprouts. Today Today is Tuesday, August 10th, 2021. Today is also the feast day of St. Lawrence. |
| 0:39.6 | Now, St. Lawrence is an incredible saint. He comes from the early church in Rome when the church was still being persecuted, and it was illegal to be a Christian. St. Lawrence was a deacon. And in the early church, a deacon |
| 0:47.0 | was assigned the job of caring for the poor, of sort of distributing the goods of the community |
| 0:53.9 | so that widows and orphans were cared for. |
| 0:57.9 | Now, it was discovered that St. Lawrence was a Christian, and he was brought before the emperor. |
| 1:03.0 | At the time, this emperor was very greedy and selfish, and he also had lots of misinformation about Christians. |
| 1:10.7 | He thought they did all sorts of wicked |
| 1:12.7 | practices, but also that they were very rich, that they had lots of wealth. And he knew that |
| 1:18.6 | St. Lawrence was in charge of distributing this wealth. So he ordered that St. Lawrence bring |
| 1:25.1 | the treasures of the Christian church to him. He sent him away and gave him a |
| 1:31.6 | couple of days to do this. Well, St. Lawrence went back to his people and he got to work. He emptied |
| 1:39.4 | the treasuries. He gave everything that he had to the poor, every last penny. And then he gathered up the |
| 1:48.0 | most pathetic and raggedy and poor Christians that he could find. He brought this big group of people |
| 1:56.1 | to the emperor. And he said, here are the treasures of the Christian faith, the faithful people that |
| 2:04.6 | believe in Jesus Christ. |
| 2:07.4 | Now, of course, he was being clever, but it's true, the people of the church are the real |
| 2:12.3 | treasure of our church, but the emperor was not amused, not at all. |
| 2:20.2 | In fact, he ordered that St. Lawrence be killed immediately and that he be killed in a gruesome way. So as the story goes, St. Lawrence was |
| 2:27.3 | stripped and he was grilled. Means he was put on an iron grate with a fire underneath as he slowly died. But he was a tough, |
| 2:37.9 | tough guy. In fact, as the legend claims, while he was dying, St. Lawrence yelled out to the |
| 2:44.7 | soldiers performing this work, turn me over. I'm done on this side. So this is the day that we celebrate St. Lawrence, |
