Hey there, Sprouts.

0:27.6

Today is Thursday, October 29th, 2020.

0:35.6

This week on the Catholic Sprouts podcast, we are diving into the public ministry of Jesus Christ.

0:41.4

We have talked about the baptism of Jesus, the setting, and what all of this meant, especially to the Jews that they were there to see it. Now, today we're going to talk about

0:47.1

what happened immediately after Jesus was baptized. If we go back to the gospel of Matthew,

0:57.9

right after the baptism, which is at the end of chapter three, we start chapter four and it says this, then Jesus was led by the spirit into the

1:05.2

desert to be tempted by the devil. He fasted for 40 days and 40 nights, and afterward, he was hungry.

1:15.3

So remember, the Jews were waiting for this warrior king that would lead them to victory over

1:22.7

their enemies, and they saw their enemy as the Romans. But Jesus said, you know, that's not the real enemy.

1:30.9

He goes immediately from his baptism to battle the real enemy.

1:36.8

And who is the real enemy?

1:39.6

Satan, the evil one, the tempter.

1:48.9

Now, as we talked about before, Jesus, when he took on our humanity, he takes our place. He not only shows us a better way, which is super important for us to

1:57.6

watch Jesus and try to live as he lived, but he also takes our place. He says,

2:04.4

come, put all of this pain and suffering on me so that others might be free. So he goes and he

2:13.1

battles Satan. And so we are going to talk today about three temptations that Satan put in

2:19.3

front of Jesus and what it means that Jesus rejected these temptations. So in the gospel,

2:27.9

we hear that the first thing that Satan tempts Jesus with is food, to use his power as God to transform stones into bread.

2:40.0

Now, this is important for us to reflect on because what is Satan telling Jesus here?

2:45.7

He's saying, you know, you're going to be happy if you just fulfill your physical desires.

2:52.6

If people have enough to eat and all the material desires that they want, then they'll be happy.
