Today is Wednesday, January 22nd, 2020.

This week on the Catholic Sprouts podcast, we are talking about the incredible gift of the sacrament of Holy Eucharist.

We've already talked about how the Eucharist is truly Jesus present,

not a symbol, not a sign, but truly Jesus present in the form of bread and wine.

And yesterday, we talked about how Jesus himself in the scriptures said that we need to eat his body and drink his blood.

And he made it clear that this was not a metaphor, that he wasn't just trying to make a point,

but this was truly what we were called to do.

Now today, we are going to spend time talking about what happens at mass, the things that we can see and sense. Tomorrow, we are going to talk about the invisible things that also truly, really

happen, but we can't really see and sense them. So tomorrow is going to be very exciting. But for today,

let's review the things that we know that happen in that second part of Mass. Of course, the first

part of Mass includes prayers, songs, but most importantly, the reading of Scripture. We read

from the Old Testament, from a letter of St. Paul, and then the gospel where we all stand

and listen to that.

Then the priest will offer us some thoughts and instructions in the homily.

We have petitions.

And then what happens, and maybe your family has been involved in this, is that people bring

forward gifts.

Sometimes there's money that's collected that is brought up, but there is always bread and

wine and water that are brought forward.

Now, why do we do this?
