Hi there, sprouts. I'm Linda Roselle, the Tin Can Pilgrim. Today is Thursday, February 6, 2025. Our saint of the day is St. Paul Miki of Japan and his companions. He was crucified for preaching about Jesus to the people of

0:41.0

Japan hundreds of years ago. Today, we continue to learn about tabernacle art and how to pray with it

0:48.6

when we visit Jesus at the tabernacle. In honor of St. Paul Miki, let's talk about tabernacle art that shows us the church

0:57.1

and some of its saints who shared the good news of salvation with others. Four of these saints are called

1:03.8

the four evangelists. Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. They each wrote one of the Gospels. Some of them also

1:10.7

wrote other parts of the Bible.

1:13.3

Art that shows us the four evangelists shows us what looks like three animals and an angel or man.

1:20.6

All of them have wings. This art is based on scripture, both in the Old Testament and in the book of

1:27.1

Revelation, which tells us in

1:29.1

very poetic and mysterious language about the return of Jesus at the end of time. See if you

1:36.3

can find the four evangelists on your tabernacle or elsewhere in your church. What do they look

1:43.0

like? St. Matthew has wings like an angel with the face of a man,

1:47.7

because St. Matthew's gospel begins with Jesus becoming man in Mary's womb. Sometimes St. Matthew holds a

1:54.8

pen and a book. St. Mark is a lion with wings, because his gospel begins with St. John the Baptist as a voice

2:03.5

crying out in the wilderness, we imagine that cry to be like the roar of a solitary and powerful

2:10.1

lion in the desert. St. Luke's gospel focuses on the theme of sacrifice or offering to God. His symbol is the ox, an animal

2:21.1

often used for sacrifice in ancient times. Finally, St. John is shown as an eagle. Because his writing

2:29.7

is so poetic that it soars high above the earth and close to heaven. When you look at a tabernacle

2:36.1

with images of the four evangelists, you can reflect on how animals can represent who we are like.
