Today we celebrate Blessed Miguel Pro,

who was a Jesuit priest martyred during the Mexican persecutions in 1927. Miguel joined the

Jesuits in 1911, but he had to flee his native country of Mexico when religious persecution

began to break out across the country, and the Mexican government became increasingly hostile towards

the Catholic Church. In 1925, Miguel was ordained a priest, and he immediately returned to Mexico

to serve the people there who had to take their practice of the faith underground.

So Miguel Pro was a master of disguise, and for a long time, he was able to escape being caught

by the authorities,

and he administered the sacraments to the people in secret, especially saying Mass.

However, he was eventually arrested and sentenced to death by facing a firing squad.

It was meant to be a public demonstration to persuade the people to forego their Catholic faith,
