Today is Friday, September 27th, 2020.

Today is also the feast day of an important French saint from the 15 and 1600s.

His name, St. Vincent de Paul. St. Vincent de Paul was a priest, but he was not always a

priest for the right reasons. He grew up very poor, and he saw the priesthood as a way to escape

poverty. And his first assignment was to go and serve the queen, so it looked like it was going to work out for him.

But God had other plans. After a series of events, St. Vincent de Paul had a deeper conversion,

and he realized that he had a specific calling to care for the poor and for the destitute.

He had a ministry to galley slaves.

Now, if you can imagine a boat where people are in the bottom rowing,

a big boat with many oars out the sides.

Many of those men down their oaring were slaves, and they were chained to their oar. So in a battle, when the boat

sunk, they died. St. Vincent de Paul cared to them, evangelized them, and when they needed to go

home and take care of things, he even rode for them when they were gone for weeks or months at a time.

He also had a special ministry with really rich ladies.

He had a way of convincing women who are very wealthy to spend their money on the poor,

to be generous.

And some of those women, he even convinced to give up everything and to join a religious

order that he founded. He cared deeply
