Today is Thursday, July 25th, 2020.

Today is also the feast day of St. James the Greater.

Say James the Greater was one of the 12 apostles.

As you likely know, there were two men named James

who were in that company that followed Jesus. This is James, the brother of John, the son of

Zebedee. They were fishermen. Jesus called them to follow him around the same time he called Peter and Andrew.

James was part of a small group of apostles that was present when Jesus raised Jiris' daughter

from the dead. He was also present at the Transfiguration.

James the greater has the honor of actually being the first of

the apostles to be martyred. When the church was still in Jerusalem, James the Greater was

beheaded by Herod. Herod beheaded James the Greater because the Jewish leaders wanted the Christians dead.

So he was the first victim. And in fact, centuries later, James the Grater's relics were discovered in Spain.

So there is a whole pilgrimage that you can make in Spain that many people do in honor of St. James.
