Summary

What did the Early Church think about Mary? A WHOLE LOT! They loved her, honored her and gave her several important titles. May is Mary's Month and all month we will be discussing Mary's titles. These titles will not only help us understand her better, but allow us to see the role she played in Salvation History and the relationship we can have with her today. This week we are exploring the many titles give to Mary by the Early Church.

0:28.4	Today is also the feast day of St. Matthew, the Evangelist.
0:33.6	Now, when we call someone an evangelist that can mean a lot of different things, but in this context, it means an author of the gospel.
0:43.4	So we are celebrating the man who wrote Matthew's Gospel.
0:48.5	We believe that this man was one of the apostles.
0:51.8	In the gospel, he is referred to as Matthew, but also as Levi. He was a tax
0:57.7	collector, which means that although he was Jewish, he was shunned by the other Jews, because he
1:03.7	basically was siding with Rome, collecting taxes from them. Regardless, Jesus asked Matthew to follow him. Matthew did. Matthew wrote the gospel,
1:14.6	and he died as a martyr for the faith. Now this week on the Catholic Spouts podcast, we are talking
1:21.4	about early titles for Mary. Each of these titles help us understand not only who Mary was, but the role that she
1:29.3	continues to play in the church. Yesterday we talked about Mary as the New Eve. Today we are
1:36.1	talking about Mary as the help of Christians, which is a title that she received way back
