Last week, I told you about the scrutinies, the special Sunday readings on the third, fourth,

and fifth Sundays of Lent for those who are about to enter the Catholic Church.

The theme for the first scrutiny was Jesus as the Living Water, and we heard the story of the

woman at the well.

This week, we will discuss the readings from the second scrutiny, which is all about Jesus being the story of the woman at the well. This week we will discuss the readings from the

second scrutiny, which is all about Jesus being the light of the world. Whether you attend

mass with the scrutiny readings or you attend mass with the regular readings, you will hear the

theme of light. The regular gospel highlights that famous verse from John 316, which says,

For God so loved the world that he gave his only son so that

whoever believes in him might not perish but have eternal life. God wants to save us, but for that to

happen, we must receive the light of Christ and live in that light. A few verses after we hear John

316, we hear the words, the light came into the world, but people prefer darkness to light because their works were evil.
