Today is the feast of St. Scholastica. She was the sister of

St. Benedict and lived in the 6th century. Some believe St. Benedict and St. Scholastica were twins,

and Scholastica started a convent of nuns about five miles from St. Benedict's monastery. Often,

they would meet at a house halfway between them and discuss the spiritual life.

During one of their meetings, they were discussing the treasures and glory of heaven,

and St. Scholastica begged her brother to stay through the night to continue their conversation about the kingdom of heaven.

St. Benedict was very strict about making sure he always stayed in his monastery,

so he refused her request.

But then Scalastica prayed fervently,

and as she prayed, the skies changed from clear to stormy instantly. The storm was so violent that St. Benedict could not leave, and so they talked about heaven all through the night. Three days later,

St. Scholastica died, and St. Benedict gave his own grave to his sister.

They were so united in life that he wanted them to be united in death.
