Summary

Join us as we dig into the 7th Commandment! There's a whole lot more to "not stealing" than you might think!

  • Monday: Not stealing means not taking what isn't mine. Why is this such a common temptation?

  • Tuesday: It's not enough to just not steal. We must also work to be less attached to material objects, and long more for heaven.

  • Wednesday: God created the world as a gift for us. However, we need to make sure that creation (water, resources, animals, and land) is shared among all people.

  • Thursday: We steal from the poor when we fail to share what we have with them.

  • Friday: Employers also steal from workers when they don't pay them well or cut corners that endanger their life of dignity.

Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Friday, October 20th, 2020. This week, we have talked about a huge variety of topics that all fall under the Seventh Commandment, you shall not steal.

0:41.4

Now, of course, stealing means taking things that don't belong to us,

0:44.6

but that's not as simple as it sounds. It applies to so many things and how we interact with the possessions we own

0:51.6

and other people that are in need. So we talked first about our attachment

0:57.2

to material objects and how we need to long for heaven more than we long for the material

1:03.9

objects of this world. We also talked about the created world, how the creative world is a gift

1:09.6

for all people. We need to make sure that

1:12.5

we aren't selfish, that we aren't taking resources from other people, and that all people are

1:18.6

being served by creation. Now, we also talked about our duty to care for the poor, that the money

1:25.8

that we have, that's extra after we are fed and clothed, St. John

1:30.7

Christendom tells us that that belongs to the poor. And when we aren't serving the poor,

1:35.7

when we're hoarding it, or indulging ourselves, that we are stealing from them. Now, today,

1:42.2

we're going to go to an even different topic and we're going to talk about

1:46.6

work. So if you read the catechism, you will see that there is quite a big section in this part

1:54.7

of the catechism under the Seventh Commandment where we talk about work. So let's explore why that is. So the first thing to remember is that as

2:04.3

human beings, we were created to work, right? We are created in the image and likeness of God.

2:11.0

And what did God do for six days of creation? He worked. He created. And so we are built to work. Now, some of us have disabilities

2:22.3

or certain things that keep us from doing work from time to time. But for the most part,

2:27.5

we are called to work. At this moment of your life, that work probably looks like schoolwork and chores and serving around
