Summary

Our patron of this month was a humble doorkeeper and yet, through simply opening the door and responding to the needs of those he greeted, St. Andre Bessette shows us how important it is to practice hospitality, especially for those most in need. This week we will discuss hospitality in the Old Testament, Jesus's practice of hospitality, and how our salvation depends on our own practice of hospitality.

Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Thursday, January 26, 2003. Today is also the feast day of two saints from the early church, St. Timothy and Titus. Now, what is so fun is that yesterday we celebrated the conversion of St. Paul,

0:47.2

and today we are celebrating two men that received their conversion through the witness and preaching of St. Timothy and Titus. Both of these men encountered St. Paul on his journey.

0:56.2

They were converted to the church.

0:57.9

They became priests.

0:59.6

They became bishops and leaders of the early church.

1:02.7

And they also, like St. Paul, wrote important letters that guided the early church

1:09.0

and continued to guide us today.

1:11.6

So we are talking about hospitality, but today first, let's practice memorizing Deuteronomy

1:18.6

chapter 6 verses 4 through 9.

1:21.6

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, amen.

1:26.6

Here, O Israel, the Lord is your God. The Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God

1:33.5

with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These words, which I am

1:40.5

commanding you today shall be on your hearts, and you shall repeat them diligently to your sons

1:46.8

and speak of them when you sit in your house,

1:50.1

when you walk on the road, when you lie down, and when you get up.

1:55.4

Amen.

1:56.5

So we have been talking about hospitality from the Old Testament

2:00.4

to Jesus who spoke mostly

2:04.0

his teachings over meals, the covenant of friendship established through a meal.

2:09.6

And today, we're going to take this to the next level.

2:13.7

Now, if you have been listening and thinking, oh, hospitality sounds nice, but I'm a little shy, or my house is kind of messy, or I don't really know if I want to do that, I'm here to tell you that hospitality is not optional for Christians.
