So St. Martin de Pores was born in the 1500s in Lima, Peru.

His mother was a freed African slave and his father was a wealthy

Spanish landowner. However, shortly after Martin was born, his father abandoned the family and

Martin grew up in terrible poverty. Also, at this time in Lima, Peru, there was terrible racism. Because he was

mixed race, he did not have very many opportunities. As a result, his mother encouraged him to

study to be a barber. Now, at the time, a barber didn't just cut hair. They also performed medical surgeries and

practices. And so Martin became a healer. Now, all along, he was very devoted to Jesus. He was a very
