You're listening to Catholic Sprouts, the daily podcast for Catholic kids that strives to plant seeds of faith.

Hey there, Sprouts. Today is Wednesday, June 15th, 2020. Now, all week, we are talking about some really incredible saints that have feast days during June. We've already talked about St. Anthony a Padua who lived during the

0:39.1

1200s. Yesterday we talked about St. Charles Luonga and the other Ugandan martyrs who lived

0:45.5

during the 1800s. And today we're going to England to learn about a saint that lived during the

0:52.9

1500s, a saint that just once again

0:57.5

sets a powerful example for what we should be willing to give up for the truth of our church,

1:03.4

and that saint is St. Thomas Moore. Now, St. Thomas More, like I said, lived in the 1500s. And what was going on in the world at this time is that several places in Europe were going through the Protestant Reformation. Luther was in Germany. There was other Calvinists that were breaking away in what is now Switzerland.

1:30.4

And then King Henry VIII, who was the king of England at the time, eventually split with

1:37.6

the Catholic Church and founded his own church in England, which is where St. Thomas More lived.

1:47.3

So St. Thomas More was a very devout Catholic man. He considered becoming a priest, but eventually he discerned that he was called to

1:53.0

marriage. He married. He had four children. And all along, he was very brilliant. He studied to be a

2:00.0

lawyer. He had a practice.

2:02.1

He also was a key member of parliament, which is the governing body in England.

2:09.3

And also, probably most importantly, he was a great personal friend of King Henry

2:16.5

the 8th.

2:22.0

Now, King Henry the 8th was kind of a larger than life person. He loved to eat. He loved to get into fights. And he ended up marrying a woman named

2:30.7

Catherine of Aragon. Now, Catherine of Aragon had been married to Henry the Ace's older brother who died when he was very young.

2:39.4

And then when Henry became king, he just sort of became married to her.

2:44.6

So he kind of took his brother's wife.

2:46.9

The problem was that saying Catherine of Aragon was having a hard time producing an air,

2:53.5

meaning they were having a hard time having a son.

2:57.2

She had several babies that died.
