Catholic Sprouts where every Saturday we discuss the art of dragon slain.

Today is the feast of St. Barnabas, an early Christian martyr who traveled with St. Paul

and gave his life to share the good news of the Gospel of Jesus with people from foreign lands

and different beliefs. In the Axe of the Apostles, St. Luke described Barnabas as a good man,

full of the Holy Spirit and faith. He often slayed

malefactor because even though he suffered a lot of persecution, he was always kind and loving

towards those he was trying to convert to Christianity. And St. Barnabas is a good saint to begin

our summer series on the virtues that can make us champions and saints. Yes, sports can teach

us a lot about our Catholic faith. And I've told you before that I ran many races, but I also played

hockey, which is my favorite sport, and I played basketball, and even did some pitching in baseball.

I don't want to get attacked by bragging, so I'm not even going to mention the fact that I had a 1.42 ERA and my son's coach pitch league a few years back.

But anyway, I came up with six virtues that helped me become a state champion runner, and that I think can help all of us become great dragon slayers and saints.

The six virtues make up an acronym of the word sports.

The S is self-discipline.

The P is perseverance and passion.

The O is obedience.

The R is repetition.

The T is teamwork, and the final S is sportsmanship.

These virtues and principles can help us in all aspects of our lives.
