When a river suffers a tumultuous adolescence, it often leaves behind something called an

Oxbow Lake. Formed when rivers rapidly change course and turned sharply, even at 180 degrees,

oxbow lakes occur when a bend grows so extreme that the river pinches off a portion of its own length.

The river's new course straightens where it once curved, and its forgotten-butted offspring

either remains indefinitely or eventually drains away, a sickle-shaped memory of the river's troubled past.

When these oxbows form in quick succession over a great length of river, the earth itself reshapes.
