You might have heard that a horse can't be useful to its rider until it's been broken.

What does that mean?

They mean you take a two by four and hit that horse over the back and break it?

No, they're talking about breaking its will.

So that it will be trained,

it will be submissive, it will be responsive to the direction of the right.
