The liaison d'engen-dangerou is a French epistolary novel by Pierre Chaudelaus de la Cloe, first published in four volumes in 1782.

It has been adapted into eight films in the last 65 years, and today we're talking about the high school adaptation from 1999, Cruel Intentions.

The movie starring Sarah Michelle Geller, Ryan Philippi, and Reese Witherspoon was a huge financial

success. It has since become a cult classic and has spawned its own adaptations, a direct-to-video

prequel in 2000, a sequel in 2004, a jukebox musical in 2015, and a 2024 television series.

The film centers around Sebastian Valmont, played by Philippi, who is a jaded,

over-wealthy high schooler spending his summer in bored pursuit of sexual conquests.

He tells his equally cynical step-sister Catherine, played by Geller, that he's finally gotten a conquest in mind that is

exciting to him, Annette, played by Witherspoon. Annette is about to transfer to their high school
