course of just a few days there was a new head of state, a new prime minister and in terms of the

key personnel a new government too.

All these momentous changes took place without a revolution, without much fuss,

without a codified constitution, and without any gunfire except to celebrate the new king, Charles III.

But they also took place without a vote of the British people.

You could conclude that these extraordinary events show why the British system of government works. It must be the envy of the world,

but you might also conclude that the British have constructed a very odd democracy indeed.
