Summary

What is primary care? In theory, it’s a long-term relationship between a healthcare practitioner and a patient encompassing preventative health practices, acute illness, and chronic disease. In practice, the insurance system has created an environment where physicians are incentivized to see more patients in less time, and the doctor-patient relationship is suffering because of it. Julie talks with CrossFit CEO Eric Roza about the current state of primary care and why the direct primary care model gives hope for the future. I remember being in med school and going to the American Academy of Family Physicians

website and reading what a family doctor was and thinking that's what I want to do.

It's really being able to be there for someone, have a long-term relationship with them and

be there for them throughout their life cycle and be able to be there when they have

0:58.4

acute issues, when they get a sore throat or a rash, to be there to care for their chronic

1:02.4

conditions and also to really help them focus on prevention and becoming as healthy as they

1:06.4

can possibly be.

1:07.7

And how has that worked out for you?

1:09.6

Well in practice it's a little different than that definition.

1:11.7

It sounds diametrically opposed to my experience with primary care.

1:15.5

Yes that was a little idealistic. It's not all it's cracked up to be in the conventional

1:19.2

system.

1:20.2

So what does primary care look like? What's the state of it today?

1:25.3

Right so right now a lot of it's driven by our insurance system. So with our insurance

1:30.4

system primary care doctors are reimbursed based on how many patients they see every day.
