as presidents have done since 1976 when Gerald Ford was the first to do so.

Even while he gave lip service to this important commemoration of black history, his anti-D-EI

efforts were helping to remove its official observation throughout the federal government.

His Department of Defense issued a news release stating that,

quote, identity months, Black History Month, Women's History Month, National Disability

Employment Awareness Month, were effectively dead, end quote. In the months to follow, he resumed his crusade against Black history,

begun at the end of his first administration with his creation of the 1776 Commission,

to purposely oppose the New York Times' 1619 project, and this time, like many of his

endeavors during his second term, he approached the project, and this time, like many of his endeavors during his second term, he approached

the project with a vengeance. In the same executive order that took aim at the Smithsonian,

he claimed the National Museum of African American History and Culture was distorting history and misrepresenting quote-unquote white culture.

The following month, his National Park Service began redacting their exhibits to remove mention of the Underground Railroad and Harriet Tubman.
