| 0:00.0 | Welcome to the beat, everyone. I'm Ari Melbert. And notwithstanding our voices and whether we keep |
| 0:03.9 | them or lose them, I can tell you, I'm going to use my voice best as I can to share with you |
| 0:07.6 | the developments in two major legal stories tonight surrounding Trump. Courtesy of other outlets, |
| 0:13.6 | we can tell you that both the Wall Street Journal and CNN are reported that Numero Uno, |
| 0:19.3 | Trump's chief of staff, Mark Meadows, has been officially subpoenaed by special counsel Jack Smith. |
| 0:24.5 | I credit those scoops by those outlets, but I also want you to know NBC has not independently confirmed this story. |
| 0:31.1 | But it is a sign, according to that reporting, those outlets, that Smith is getting tough and aggressive in the criminal coup probe. |
| 0:37.0 | So that's part of our top story. I'm going to get to that in a moment. It is in the same set of issues, though, that relate to the other big story, a direct link to the other criminal probe at the state level, totally different prosecutors, totally different system, because we have two sets of prosecutors, the way our country has run, as you know, federal and state. And this is down in Georgia, where if you follow the news, you've probably heard about all the anticipation about this report or excerpts from it. Now, the stolen election plot was, of course, an epicenter in Georgia. It wasn't the only state, but it was a big one. Trump and his allies have not faced accountability or penalties in any of these pros, |
| 1:12.5 | but in Georgia, it is the DA there, Fannie Willis, who has been more aggressive than many |
| 1:16.7 | in pursuit of what she says will be justice. |
| 1:19.4 | Now, there's this grand jury report that's coming out of that case released today in part, |
| 1:25.9 | and so now we're learning new things like that they spoke with 75 witnesses. |
| 1:30.1 | The report excerpts do not tell us the underlying testimony, and boy, would we like that, |
| 1:35.0 | but the 75 gives you a sense of the scope. And we know who some of them are. |
| 1:39.6 | Senator Lindsay Graham, who tried to get out of it. Rudy Giuliani, who had his loss license |
| 1:44.0 | suspended. The coup mastermind, John Eastman, who I've told out of it. Rudy Giuliani, who had his loss license suspended. |
| 1:45.0 | The coup mastermind, John Eastman, who I've told you faces a lot of liability, Mike Flynn and others. |
| 1:50.3 | Now, as for that reported subpoena for Mark Meadows, remember, he was already ordered to testify in this Georgia case where the news is coming out tonight, but we don't know if he came in. |
| 2:00.7 | Another big development in today's report released, the grand jury thinks that people were lying under oath. |
| 2:06.5 | And let me tell you why that matters. |
| 2:07.8 | Number one, anyone committing the crime of lying under oath must be worried about shielding some greater crime, |
| 2:15.6 | or they would have to just be really, really well dumb and not listen to lawyers' advice, etc. |
