Summary

Welcome the official start of season two of Majority 54. If you’re new to Majority 54, I’m Jason Kander, the president of Let America Vote: an organization dedicated to making sure that every American gets to vote by creating political consequences for anyone who wants to diminish the most basic American right. And we’re talking to the 54% of American who did not vote for Donald Trump about where we go from here. He's a District Attorney for Nueces County in Texas. He's a proponent of criminal justice reform. He's a self-proclaimed "Mexican biker lawyer covered in tattoos." He's a Dallas Cowboys fan. He's never prosecuted a single case. He's Mark Gonzalez, and he's our guest today. We're going to discuss how law enforcement impacts real people, how sweeping reform needs to come to America, and how District Attorneys can change enforcement on a local level.  We hope you enjoy listening to this interview as much as we enjoyed discussing Mark's colorful history and bright future. So you are a young Hispanic male with visible tattoos and you're the district attorney.

0:07.0

How does that affect sort of your view of yourself and how you do your work?

0:13.0

You know what I really think is that there need to be more young, Hispanic or young white

0:20.4

tattooed or young anything as the face of our government. You know, if you look at to all these

0:26.5

public offices, I mean, none of the individuals look like the people they represent.

0:31.8

None of the people in office have those conversations. They probably feel like Mr. Sessions, you know,

0:37.8

bad people's smoke pot, you know, because they don't know anybody who is opposite of that. So I

0:44.8

think that's where, you know, that's where the real power and the change really lies. Get individuals

0:50.5

who either relate to you as a voter or look like you as a voter in office because that's where

0:56.0

real change comes from. I'm Jason Kander and this is Majority 54. Welcome to the second season of

1:03.5

our show. Before we go any further, please consider subscribing to make sure that you don't miss

1:07.6

a single episode this season. If you're new to Majority 54, I'm the president of Let America Vote.

It's an organization that's dedicated to making sure that every American gets to vote by creating

political consequences for undemocratic politicians who are trying to take away the basic right to

1:22.1

vote. Majority 54 is named for the 54% of Americans who did not vote for President Trump. And I

1:28.6

created it to help that 54% talk to their family members, their friends and acquaintances who did

1:34.0

vote for Donald Trump. This show is about expanding our majority by arming you with the tools to have

1:39.7

these conversations. This week, we're talking about a cause that has unanimous support across the

1:44.6

political spectrum. Well, not unanimous or even near unanimous support for a single policy,

1:49.9

but wide agreement that something needs to change in a major way. And that cause is criminal justice

1:55.3

reform. From progressives to the Koch brothers, there's a strong consensus that the current situation

2:00.8

is not working. Heck, it's almost become an inherently generational issue. If you're under 30,
