Summary

The confidence vote that Boris Johnson won narrowly is already having consequences. Tory MPs deploy their new leverage to demand vaguely-defined tax cuts and a new war with the EU over the Northern Ireland protocol …but what about the spending increases the same Tory MPs also want? And as the UK economy totters on the cliff’s edge, how would it cope with an economic battle with the EU? Rock & Roll Politics is live daily at the Edinburgh Festival from Monday August 15th. Thank you so much for tuning in wherever you are in the UK and indeed around the rest of

the world. And I know I say this every week, but as ever, we have got so much to cram in

0:48.1

in our time together. So if it's okay with all of you, this is how we're going to structure our time together.

Tory MPs, commentators and indeed cabinet ministers, four in inverted commas, tax cuts. I want to explore those two words so potent in

1:32.6

British politics since the early 1980s, and what it really means. It's repeated as if it is in itself

1:41.8

kind of so obvious, but it's not.

1:45.5

And inevitably, we are going to return briefly to Brexit

1:52.1

because you just can't get away from it.

1:54.1

The Irish question occurs again and again,

2:00.2

because as we've discussed many times on this podcast, there is no

2:05.2

answer to it. And unsurprisingly, the protocol negotiated and proclaimed as a triumph by Lord

2:14.1

Frosty and Boris Johnson is under all sorts of pressure.

2:20.4

So, and with all kinds of consequences.

2:23.7

So I'll be reflecting on those two immediate kind of consequences.

2:28.6

Johnson trying to please his backbenchers.

2:30.5

He has no choice but to try and please them.

2:32.9

They have leverage over him. what pops up, tax cuts. And oh yeah, we're going to take them on over the protocol that we ourselves negotiated. Anyway, I'll be reflecting on those two themes. And then over to you with some as ever, fantastic questions which cast so much light on so many of

2:53.6

the themes whirling around British politics at the moment. But before all of that, thank you
