Summary

Incarcerated people have long played an important role in firefighting in California. Now, in the middle of the state’s worst fire season on record, formerly incarcerated people are poised to play more of a role. We visit with a group of men just out of prison who are training to become professional firefighters.

0:45.0	It was the first day at class for a group of formerly incarcerated men who are training to become California firefighters at a spot about an hour north of LA.
0:53.0	It's the Cal Fire Ventura Training Center. It's this cluster of buildings not far from the coast.
0:59.0	We're in this one big classroom with 17 guys sitting at tables.
1:04.0	They've each got a little name tag in front of them.
1:07.0	Very first day of school feel.
1:09.0	And the guys had all just gotten out of prison.
1:11.0	Some of them had been out for a few weeks and others for a few months.
1:15.0	And the moon in the room was a mix of nerves, anticipation, and E.
1:19.0	I have to say as a teacher, I definitely recognize a little bit of boredom.
1:25.0	But then these two guys got up to speak.
1:29.0	And it's not going to be easy, guys.
1:31.0	We're going to tell you right now. It's not easy.
