January 17th, 2008. British Airways Flight 38, a Boeing triple-7, is on final

approach in a London Heathrow airport after a 10.5 hour flight from Beijing.

136 passengers and 16 crew members are on board and so far this flight has been

uneventful. The flight path took the plane over Mongolia, Siberia, and Scandinavia

on its way into the United Kingdom. Now two miles from the airport and at an

altitude of 720 feet, something is a miss. The plane's auto throttle is trying to

get more power from the engines but the engines are not responding. The plane

slows down to 124 miles per hour and is now in danger of stalling. The

co-pilot takes manual control at 150 feet of altitude and tries to fully engage

the throttle but the engines still do not respond. The plane slams into the

ground 890 feet short of runway 27 left at London Heathrow Airport. What happened

to cause one of the safest planes in the world to crash so close to its destination?
