Miss Matty received a visit from Miss Betty Barker inviting her to a card party the following week.

Miss Betty used to run a milliners in the village with her sister and they had been very exclusive in who they accepted as their patronage.

After her sister's death, she had shut the shop and retired,

but still maintained only the most elite connections in Cranford society.

Her prized possession was her cow, who she went to great pains to preserve in the utmost comfort.

Miss Matty only really cared to ensure that the other guests would be good card players for

this activity was taken very seriously among the women of Cranford. It was noted that Mrs Fitz Adams, a recent widow, would not be attending, given

that Miss Betty Barker considered her late husband too low-ranking to make her eligible.

The usual women arrived and were met by the honourable Mrs Jamieson and her dog, Carlo.
