Summary

I sat down with Craig Groeschel, pastor of Life.Church, for an AMAZING conversation. We talked about: How to actually make your marriage last 35 years Why you should prioritize your marriage over your kids The behind-the-scenes safeguards he’s put in place to protect his integrity What anxiety looked like for him as a pastor Social media boundaries (this one hit me hard) And why struggling with mental health is NOT a sin I loved how honest he was about going through anxiety in 2019 — even while leading 45 campuses. It reminded me that no one is immune, and asking for help is wisdom, not weakness. This episode felt like a masterclass in safeguards, sanctification, and self-awareness. And I’m honestly so grateful for leaders like Craig who are willing to be vulnerable. In This Episode 03:30 – 35 Years of Marriage 09:10 – Safeguards & Integrity in Ministry 16:55 – Private Faith vs. Public Platform 24:45 – Connecting with God in Different Seasons 25:50 – Craig’s Anxiety Story 29:00 – Asking for Help 32:20 – Pattern Disruption & Healthy Rhythms 41:55 – Social Media & Mental Health 46:10 – Is Anxiety a Sin? There are Christians out there who spend years thinking that they're broken or failing God because they're struggling with unwanted, distressing thoughts. I'm talking about the thoughts that interrupt worship. Will God forgive me if I make a mistake in my prayer? I need to start over and do it perfectly. Or blasphemous images that pop into your head and make you feel like you've sin for just thinking them. Unwanted thoughts like these aren't a spiritual failure. They could be due to a common

but overlooked condition, religious OCD. Religious OCD, also known as scrupulosity OCD, can turn your faith

0:28.4

into a source of constant guilt, doubt, and fear. But because OCD is still widely misunderstood,

0:33.9

a lot of people don't even know that it can focus on their faith. That's why it is so important

0:38.0

to know that OCD isn't just about being neat or organized like the stereotypes suggest. OCD latches

0:44.0

onto what you care about most, causing a cycle of distressing intrusive thoughts and behaviors done to get

0:48.6

rid of the anxiety they create, like praying until it feels just right, repeatedly confessing

the same sin, or trying to

figure out your thoughts. Any relief from these behaviors is short-lived so the cycle keeps going.

Religious OCD isn't something to be ashamed of or suffer from in silence. It's a common type of

What does that look like behind the scenes of the safeguards that you do to protect your marriage? I would not have safeguards on my phone if I weren't vulnerable to it. I said, if I keep going at this pace, I think this job will kill me. I was a full-time pastor, and I was praying more publicly than I was privately, and it was horrible. People would never assume a pastor struggles with anxiety. I just thought I'm the pastor. I'm supposed to be strong for everybody. I'm struggling. I'm not going to really tell anybody. I'll figure this out. I mean, I genuinely have very severe church hurt.
