The FDA is changing the way it approves COVID-19 vaccines for Americans.

It'll mean access for shots will be more targeted at adults over 65 and high-risk groups.

Here's CNN's Meg Terrell.

Hi, Afoma, up until this point, COVID vaccines had been updated each fall in a similar

way to seasonal flu shots to try to best match circulating strains and provide better protection.

The CDC had recommended annual COVID boosters for everyone over the age of six months.

The new plan from the FDA maintains that system, but only for people over the age of 65, or for younger people with risk

factors putting them at high risk for severe COVID, things like asthma, diabetes, and obesity.

For healthy people under the age of 65, the agency now says it'll require longer clinical trials,

which experts say likely means that group won't be eligible for updated shots this fall.
