Hey short waivers, Erin Scott here. While we in the US are seeing Omicron cases drop precipitously,

0:05.9

other countries are seeing an uptick. Science correspondent Alison Aubrey is one of our trusty

0:11.4

guides to where this country stands with COVID. She spoke with Morning Editions A Martina's

0:16.0

on Monday about what the rise in cases elsewhere means for the US, how the US is looking to

0:21.6

sewage of all things to detect any rise in infections here, and the status of COVID relief funding.

Good morning, A. Well, daily case counts have more than doubled over the last few weeks throughout

1:11.2

the UK. Hospitalizations are on the upswing and the country has documented a slight increase in

1:17.8

deaths too. Now throughout the pandemic, the US has tended to be a few weeks behind Great Britain

1:24.0

following the same pattern. So this has led to concern. The US could see a bit of a boost to

1:30.4

Dr. Anthony Fauci spoke about the BA2 variant on ABC yesterday.

1:35.0

It has a degree of transmission advantage over the original Omicron, but not a multifold advantage.

1:43.3

So the bottom line is we likely will see an uptick in cases as we've seen in the European

1:50.4

countries, particularly the UK, where they've had the same situation as we've had now.
