Summary

One of the narcissist types that is hardest to identify is the covert narcissist. Today we will go through a covert narcissist's behavioural traits, the ways they get their narcissistic supply, how that makes us feel, and how to deal with that behaviour.

What You Will Learn In This Episode:

  • What happens when a narcissist agrees to go to therapy
  • Why covert narcissists are so hard to identify
  • How they act like they are the victim
  • The spiral effect of nobody believing our story
  • How to bring the power back to yourself
  • Why you should stop worrying about what other people say

When we think about a narcissist, the first image that comes to mind is an arrogant, entitled and overly confident individual. But a covert narcissist is quite the opposite, they will portray themselves as a victim who suffers constant abuse. We need to be aware that they can turn people who know us against us, and be ready to deal with that.

So in today's episode, I really want to touch upon the different types of narcissists

0:36.8

and really hone in on one that I think is probably the most

0:41.0

subtle and most dangerous insofar as it's probably the one that we would least expect to be

0:47.7

associated with how a narcissist presents with those behavioral traits. Now there are different

0:53.5

types and you may have heard the

0:55.4

words of malignant narcissist, overt narcissist, lots of other different types, communal narcissist,

1:03.5

the benign narcissist, all of those different types. And I'll talk about those in other episodes.

But I want to go back to one that I probably

1:11.4

get the most messages about, or when I post on Instagram or on Facebook, around the covert

1:17.7

narcissist and the behavioral traits of a covert narcissist, I probably get the most messages

1:23.6

about the covert narcissist. Because if you think about narcissism, the person who is a

1:30.6

narcissist, and my views, again, are a little bit different from perhaps mainstream in the

1:38.0

diagnostic element of narcissistic personality disorder. So we know for someone to be classified as a narcissist,

1:46.1

because we've medicalized narcissist into narcissistic personality disorder, we always seem to

1:52.8

get, if we mention someone as a narcissist, there's always that element of medicalization.

1:57.6

We are pathologizing it. Have they got that diagnosis? Now of course, like I've mentioned in many of my

2:03.9

other episodes, the issue with that is the person needs to recognize they have an issue to go and see

2:12.1

someone to get a formal diagnosis. Just if you thought you might be suffering with cancer, you could keep saying
