Summary

The Blessings of the Faith series recently published by P&R is a valuable resource highlighting the distinctives of the Presbyterian and Reformed faith. The series, written for Church laity as an introduction to Presbyterian ecclesiology and polity, is particularly helpful for Christians with backgrounds in other traditions. Carl’s guest is Jason Helopoulos, editor of the series and author of Covenantal Baptism. He’s the senior pastor of University Reformed Church in East Lansing, MI. Jason shares his love for the sacrament of covenantal baptism and explains how his perspective on the subject has changed since his seminary days. What does baptism represent in the Reformed tradition? How is the concept of judgment associated with baptism? Do we pray with our children or for our children? Don’t miss this very insightful discussion.  Congrats to our winners of complimentary copies of Jason's Covenantal Baptism:  *Joan H. from Huron, OH    *Bradley E. from Anthem, AZ

Welcome to Mortification of Spin, a casual conversation about things that count with Carl Truman and Todd Pruitt.

0:32.8

Mortification of Spin is a weekly podcast from the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. Let's join this week's

0:39.6

conversation. Welcome to Mortification of Spin. I'm the only host today. My name's Carl Truman. I'm professor of

0:57.8

biblical and religious studies at Grove City College in Western Pennsylvania. I'm also an ordained

1:02.9

minister in the Orthodox Presbyterian Church. And usually I'm here with my sidekick, my straight man,

1:09.9

my hardy to my laurel, Todd Pruitt. But unfortunately,

1:14.0

Todd has had a pastoral emergency and is not able to be with us today. So I'm going to be

1:19.6

flying solo. But there is no need to panic. I am not going to be indulging in some long monologue

1:25.5

about what a fantastic guy I am and how wonderful it is

1:29.3

that Todd is not here. True, though, both of those things may be, I will not indulge in them.

1:35.8

In fact, we have a guest today. He is a minister in the same denomination as Brother Todd,

1:44.0

the Presbyterian Church in America.

1:45.9

And his name is Jason Halopoulos.

1:48.4

He is the senior pastor of University Reform Church in East Lansing in Michigan, where, of

1:55.9

course, another friend of this program, Kevin DeYoung, was once upon a time a minister.

2:03.0

And Jason, welcome to the program. Hi, Carl, good to be with you. Thanks for having me. It's, I'm right in saying, I think, that

2:08.6

the church was originally a reformed church in American denomination, and you've moved to the PCA,

2:14.2

perhaps while Kevin was still there. I can't remember the exact chronology.

2:23.8

Yeah, that's right. It started about 55 years ago as an RCA congregation on the campus of Michigan State University. And I came to the church back in 2012. I'd always been in the

2:31.5

PCA, ordained in the PCA, labored, you know, that crazy term we use in the PCA, ordained in the PCA, labored.

2:39.6

You know, that crazy term we use in the PCA, laboring out of bounds is what they called it.
