0:29.5	masquerading as Christians, false teachers who arose from within the church. Today on Truth for Life,
0:37.6	Alistair Begg begins a series in First Timothy. He shows what is absolutely necessary if a church
0:44.7	is going to remain faithful.
0:46.6	Can I invite you to take your Bible and to turn to First Timothy and to the opening verses of the
0:58.8	First Chapter? And I've chosen to begin here in First Timothy, which along with Second Timothy and
1:06.6	Titus comprises what we refer to as the pastoral epistles. These are a trilogy of letters written by the
1:15.7	Apostle Paul to two pastors, Timothy, who receives two letters and Titus, who gets one, urging both of
1:24.2	them to fulfill their responsibilities as pastors and to do so with moral integrity and with a measure
1:31.8	of biblical authority. Paul was concerned that Titus would stay in Crete and straighten out
1:39.3	matters of unfinished business, particularly as it related to leadership within the church.
1:45.5	That in studying Second Timothy we noted, Paul's great concern in light of his impending death
1:52.2	to pass carefully into the hands of his young lieutenant Timothy, the truths of the gospel,
1:59.2	and urging upon Timothy the responsibility to guard this good deposit which had been
2:04.7	entrusted to him and to do so with the help of the Holy Spirit. Now in writing First Timothy,
2:11.5	Paul explains midway through chapter 14, I should say towards the end of chapter 3 in verse 14,
2:18.6	that he is writing in this way so that although he is hoping to come and see Timothy, if he happens to
2:26.2	be delayed, he says, I am writing these instructions so that you will know how people ought to conduct
2:32.7	themselves in God's household which is the pillar and foundation of the truth. His great concern then
2:42.9	is for there to be true belief and right behavior and he makes short work of launching into what he
2:51.8	regards as the most pressing issue of all, namely the existence of these false teachers who have
2:58.5	arisen within the fellowship. And so this morning we are going to deal with these verses under the
