The move to green light Huawei's involvement in Britain's 5G this week sets the UK on a collision course with the US.

It also threatens to cleave the wider Five Eyes Intelligence Sharing Alliance.

Downing Street has concluded, however, that the economy must trump security in this instance

issuing Huawei would delay the UK's mobile network upgrade by up to two years and cost the

economy billions because the West failed to invest sufficiently in developing

rival technology a decade ago.

British spooks believe now that they can manage the risk of Huawei.
