Summary

Ohio State's 2026 Big Ten schedule starts with two teams that, on paper, don't look like talent-equated opponents. But that's what makes both so interesting. On an already loaded schedule, Illinois and Iowa can be easy to overlook. Does that make these two weeks the epitome of a trap game situation? Hey, hey, hey, come on in.

1:01.3

Welcome back to Buckeye Talk. I'm Stephen Means, and that is Stefan Khrushnik, and this is another look ahead to Ohio State's 2026 schedule, and I'm going to let you in on the

1:07.8

minutia of things here, because today was supposed to be Iowa Day. And then both of us

1:13.4

realized as we were getting on to record Iowa Day that we did not do Illinois last week. We did do an

1:19.5

orange team last week, but it wasn't an orange team in the Big Ten. It was Texas. So now we are

1:24.3

pulling an audible and giving you a two-for so we can stay on schedule heading into the rest of the off season. And the way we talked about it, though, it is going to end up making it a lot of sense. They play Illinois and Iowa in back-to-back weeks. And what I think could be described as trap 14-day period for Ohio State because their schedule is ball state tune up game

1:47.8

Texas big game. Ken State could either be a let's make sure everybody on the roster plays

1:54.9

because we just had a very difficult game seven days ago so maybe Jeremiah Smith and

1:59.4

Brandon Ennis and Jermthews and canyana

2:01.9

jackson play no more than 35 snaps total in the game or it is let's nitpick this team now because

2:08.8

texas just exposed all their problems and now we want to see if they fixed them in seven days game

2:12.8

and then the big 10 schedule begins on september 26 at home home against Illinois before you go on the road

2:17.5

to Iowa on October. I'm trying, I think this is the first time Illinois is coming to

2:23.3

Columbus. No, that's actually not true. They came to Columbus a couple years ago. But this stretch,

2:27.1

is that the right way to frame this? Illinois, who may be in a bit of a rebuild of a year,

2:32.6

and then Iowa being at Iowa and being what that has been for years. And really the last time Ohio State went to Iowa was almost 10 years ago now. Is trap concept the right way to look at what this 14-day period could be for Ohio State? I think so. I think so. I think the opponents kind of play a part into that. I think the way the schedule sets up kind of plays a part into that. We'll talk later, you know, kind of about that Iowa game specifically. I don't know if that game is so much a trap, but I think the Illinois game definitely is. I did a thing on our site last week where I kind of, you know, each season look at the games and try to determine which ones the trap games could be. And I felt like Illinois was a prime opportunity at a trap game, whereas Iowa, not so much. But the stretch of the schedule itself, I think, is trappy in its nature. It's also kind of a pivotal stretch because of that, because we know what the Texas game is, right? It's a toss-up game right now, and we'll see who who wins that and we've talked about it a lot of like

3:24.3

it's okay if you lose that game but it just makes the stretch of Indiana and Oregon and Michigan

3:30.3

and USC like it makes those games that much more important if you win at Texas but you lose one of

3:36.2

these two then you're right back in that same spot right and both these games you can kind of circle

3:40.8

as opportunities to you know fall into a trap and lose. So it's like you could walk away from a Texas game thinking like, okay, we're good, we're in the clear up until we start playing those premier teams again. And then you run into Illinois or Iowa, and you're right back to where you started, where you've got a loss before you play USC, Indiana, Oregon, or Michigan, right?
