Summary

Nature doesn’t directly determine human fate but it is important that we understand how natural laws affect our lives. Understanding Earthly Order can help us effectively spark change. Dr. Saleem H Ali, student of science, has traveled to over 150 countries, researching ways humans can positively impact the environment. His theories on Earthly Order can teach us something about working with nature, instead of against it.

0:10.3

How's your world? Are you creating? Are you generating? Are you clearing out your life of distraction?

0:17.8

Or you need a little shake up? Well, today I want you to focus and listen to this incredible

0:24.3

conversation I had with Saleem Ali. He is such an interesting guy. He has a bachelor's in chemistry

0:33.2

from Tufts University, a master's and PhD degrees in environmental policy and planning at Yale

0:41.7

and MIT. He holds a blue and gold distinguished professorship in geography and spatial sciences

0:52.0

at the University of Delaware and his honorary professor at the University of Queensland, Australia.

This is such an incredible conversation. I felt like I wasn't even doing a podcast. I felt like I was

1:06.9

just talking to someone I was so interested in learning more. He also is a fellow of the Royal Society

1:15.0

of Art and the Royal Geographical Society in the United Kingdom and serves on boards of

1:23.1

adventure scientists and mediators beyond borders and international. He has traveled to over 150

1:31.2

countries. So when you get this kind of understanding of the world, you have perspective that is very

1:50.4

hey, don't use plastic bottles and use glass. Well, you can't always do that depending on the situation,

1:59.4

depending on if you're in an airport. That's a very little example. But as we look at global issues,

2:08.0

food waste, power systems, solar, wind, how we look at all of our systems requires a broad view

2:20.4

and a broad understanding of how these things are working and how they are failing. But for me,

2:28.5

when I listen to someone who has such a breadth and width of understanding, you come to realize

2:36.2

everything is more complex than just a flippant idea. If the idea is not shared throughout many

2:45.7

different parts of a system, then we're concluding things that then don't really make sense

2:53.0

in the real world. So when you look at things, we have to broaden our aperture. We are not experts.

3:00.4

We can't pretend to be experts in areas where we haven't done the study. We need to stay curious.
