Hello and welcome to I know Dino.

0:33.8

I'm Garrett.

And I'm Sabrina.

0:39.2

And today we'll be talking about Koryithosaurus and a lot of dinosaur news.

0:47.7

So first in the news is an article that comes out of biology letters by Carl T. Bates and others titled,

0:52.4

Downsizing a Giant, re-evaluating Dreadnoughtus's body mass.

0:57.0

So we've heard from paleontologists in the past that dinosaur discoveries often follow a trajectory of maybe the biggest ever to maybe not as big as we thought, but still huge.

1:03.6

And then ultimately, well, it's similar in size to some other huge dinosaurs,

1:08.5

which in my opinion is largely due to the hype of a new discovery.

1:13.3

Everyone always gets very excited. And then they give an initial range of, you know,

1:19.0

smallest possible weight, smallest likely weight, up to the highest likely weight. And most

1:24.8

people remember the number on the high end. So then when it narrows in

1:28.4

on a more likely weight, everybody thinks of it is shrinking. But usually it's kind of in that

1:32.7

original range. So it appeared a little bit less likely in the case of Dreadnoughtus because they had

1:39.1

both the femur and the humorous, which can be used to get a good indication of a dinosaur's mass.

1:45.8

And they also discovered a large number of bones in the tail, a couple in the neck and some

1:50.0

ribs that gave a better estimate for its size. Sometimes they try to base all of the weight on one

1:56.6

bone, and that always brings up more skepticism than if you have a more complete skeleton.

2:03.0

But in this paper, Bates and his co-authors specifically take issue with the scaling equation
